Jaime gave us a great balance of legend, science and humour. Jaime, our cave tour guide then caught us up with helmets in hand for us and the kids and provided us with a guided cave tour. We also bumped into a very friendly spider monkey who was keen to show us around. In the wildlife sanctuary we saw all host of snakes, luckily these were captive. Reception staff were friendly and locker rental was free upon showing ID. Our taxi took us down a dirt road where we could see lots of wildlife in fairly dense jungle. We booked a taxi for this journey but you could easily walk along a (safer) dirt road adjacent to the 307 and pick up the (presumably free) shuttle from the entrance. It turns out the the site is 5km away from the 307 entrance. We were staying at the Bahia Principe and thought this was just a quick taxi ride. We booked the wildlife sanctuary, cave and Cenote tour. We booked on the day online and staff were very helpful via online chat. This year we got a lot of complaints about using the dollar. Just remember they are going to charge you so bring your haggling a game. There are also guys with monkey iguanas birds etc. The Mayan dancers are usually there and you can get some great pictures with them. Great place to get souvenirs and grab some lunch. There is a large market there with food drinks and vendors. If you go on the weekend i recommend you buy everything at the gate as it will save you from having to wait in long lines. I don't remember exact prices but it wasn't very expensive. You also have to pay for entrance into the state park and then entrance to the ruins. Its usually windy but if there is no wind there can be mosquitos.īe aware that if you drive you do have to pay for parking. Also this last time we went they discovered new gravesites and there was an active dig going on which was pretty cool.īring your walking shoes bug spray and sunscreen. Pretty sure the beach in the ruins is permanently closed but it is small and the beach in the state park is a short walk away. Every guide we have had has been very knowledgeable. We have visited 3 times so far and every time we learn something new. Highly recommend a guide so you can learn all the history. Its not a large area so you can see it all in one day. Overall a good resort but don’t expect a 5 star experience, but decent resort for the price. There is no reason to not see these ruins if you're in Tulum. They did have entertainment nightly which my friend and I weren’t interested in but my son found it fun. So it was a but gross walking down the halls seeing the dirty plates, plus the birds were eating off the plates in the hallway. Then when you finish you leave the plates outside your door but they were not quick at picking up. Room service menu was ok- nothing great. Buffet- we only tried it on the day we arrived and we were not impressed. They came by and said they’d be back in 5 min but never returned. Fridge in our room didn’t work, had to contact maintenance for a replacement (they did fairly quickly). The Not So Good: - Check-in process was long even though we arrived around 3:30 pm. Housekeeping staff did a great job cleaning our room. The coffee shop was great, in the afternoon they offered ice cream. You need to make reservations before you arrive as they only have 1 seating and limit the seating to around 20 people. The fancy multi-course French restaurant was good (very small courses). The Mexican restaurant was ok, wasn’t that great. The Italian restaurant had very good food. The Rodeo Grill had great good! We had dinner here twice. The resort is fairly small so it was easy to get around. My son is 11 and it was a great resort where he could go off and do his thing and meet up with me at a scheduled time. The adults only pool was great, never had a problem getting the cabana chairs. Ricky is one of the pool concierge and was great at refreshing our pool towels and bringing ice cold washcloths that smell wonderful to help you cool down. They don’t checkout the towels based on your room. The Good: - The beds were super comfortable with great pillows - Nice large towels for the room and at the pool - At the pool you can get as many towels as you need.
